PRIAPISM
Priapism
is an emergency condition which is a disorder of penile erection that persists
> 4 hours and is not related to sexual interest or stimulation. This
condition may occur at all ages without relation to a certain group.
Types
Of Priapism :
Non-ischaemic priapism is a condition of persistent erection more
than 4 hours caused by uncontrolled cavernous arterial inflow. The patient
typically complaining of not completely rigid erections which is not
accompanied with pain .patient may report full rigid erections which occur with
sexual stimulation.
Ischaemic priapism is a condition of persistent erection more
than 4 hours characterized by rigidity of the corpora cavernosa and by penile
doppler decreased or no cavernous arterial inflow. The typical picture is
patient complaining of penile pain and a rigid erection by clinical
examination.
Stuttering priapism “recurrent
or intermittent” is a definite condition
that is characterized by repeated and painful attacks of long-lasting
erections. Erections are self-limited with periods of detumescence in between.
This condition is due to repeated attacks of ischaemic priapism. The duration
of the erectile episodes is less than in ischaemic priapism. frequency of
episodes and its duration is variable. a single episode may progress to a full
ischaemic priapism.
